Clashes between BNP and Youth Workers in Sandwip, 13 injured

At least 13 people were injured in a clash between BNP and Jubo Dal workers in Sandwip, Chittagong. The incident took place at around 5 pm on Wednesday in Pelishya Bazar of Magadhara Union of the upazila.

Two of the injured in the clash have been sent to Chittagong as their condition is critical. Eight are undergoing treatment at Sandwip Upazila Health Complex. At least three more are reportedly undergoing treatment at a local doctor’s chamber.

Several traders in Pelishya Bazar told Prothom Alo that the clash took place between the followers of Magadhara Ward 5 BNP General Secretary Md. Milad and the followers of Magadhara Union Jubo Dal convener Md. Kamrul over the issue of expanding influence in the area. When the injured were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, the two sides also attacked each other there. When they went to the health complex, it was seen that 20 to 30 people under treatment in front of the emergency department tried to attack the opposing party’s people. At that time, Gachua Union BNP convener Md. Abdur Rahim tried to calm both sides.

An injured person named Md. Sohel, who came to the emergency department for treatment, told Prothom Alo that a total of eight injured people have come to the hospital for treatment. Apart from him, the other injured are Mahfuz, Milad, Altaf, Akbar, Noab, Parvez and Didar. The condition of injured Jubo Dal leaders Kamrul and Mahid was critical, so they were sent to Chittagong at 7 pm.

Chittagong North District BNP Joint Convener Belayet Hossain told Prothom Alo, “This clash happened in my area. Basically, the incident happened with the authority of the Pelishya Bazar Businessmen’s Association.” Regarding the tension at the health complex, he said that the Navy has already arrived there. The situation is now calm.

Sandwip Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Shafiqul Islam Chowdhury told Prothom Alo, “We immediately reached the spot after receiving the news. We have not received any complaint yet. If we receive a complaint, action will be taken against those involved in the incident.”
